There’s just something about autumn in the South. Maybe it’s the fact that it’s so fleeting, this spectacular season slotted comfortably between the sweltering days of summer and the bitter cold of winter. Whatever it is, though, the time to get outside and enjoy the beauty of fall in Alabama is now, before it gives way to chillier days and nights.
Those of us in and around Pelham, AL, have an irresistible draw in the form of Oak Mountain State Park. With its 25 miles of well-marked and impeccably maintained hiking trails, a hike is in order. And no matter what your level of fitness or hiking experience, you’ll find one here to tackle at your own pace – all while soaking up the natural beauty of your surroundings.
Pick a Trail
- White Trail – This 6.4-mile-long trail is an out-and-back, or you can take a connector path and head a different direction. The White Trail climbs to the park’s highest elevation, Shackleford Point, at 1,260 feet.
- Blue Trail – Set out on the Blue Trail for a 6.7-mile-long out-and-back trek. This trail climbs steeply up a ridge and varies in elevation from about 620 feet to 1,100 feet before ending at the Peavine Falls parking lot.
- Yellow Trail – Head out along this 8-mile stretch to stroll along Lake Tranquility and end at Peavine Road. Some climbing is involved.
- Green Trail – This is also known as the Peavine Falls Trail and is just 1.9 miles long. Still, its elevation varies from 550 feet to 1,100 feet. It doesn’t go straight to the falls themselves but you can get there via the White or Blue Trail after you end your Green Trail hike at the Peavine Falls parking lot.
- Lake Trail – This rolling, multi-use trail invites both hikers and bikers to enjoy a 2.3-mile route that meanders around Double Oak Lake.
- Wildlife Center Trail – This short 0.3-mile trail leads from the beach parking lot to the Wildlife Center. It also connects to the Treetop Nature Trail, an elevated boardwalk housing rehabilitated birds of prey.
