About St. Jude
St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital was founded in 1962 with the goal of eliminating childhood cancer. The hospital’s mission is “is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment,” according to their website. St. Jude’s founder Danny Thomas wanted to make sure no child was ever denied treatment based on a family’s ability to pay and the organization has stayed true to that mission over the decades.
After more than a half-century of existence, St. Jude has helped push the survival rate for childhood cancer from less than 20% in 1962 to more than 80% today. This is due to a combination of groundbreaking research and fundraising. Due to the fact that St. Jude never turns anyone in need away based on financial resources, fundraising is a key element of the organization’s mission. Events like the Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer in Birmingham help with fundraising efforts.
Events like these are of great benefit to St. Jude, but the hospital needs more support on a consistent basis to keep up the fight against childhood cancer. There are a variety of ways in which you can help out. Consider joining with St. Jude to help out with this worthy cause.
