Nobody does BBQ like Birmingham. You never have to go far to find a great meal in the Magic City, so check out this list of local BBQ joints and pay a visit to these wonderful restaurants!
SAW’s BBQ
SAW’s BBQ is a beloved Birmingham original, and the enterprise has grown from its first dozen-table space in Homewood to five brick and mortar restaurants around town as well as a food truck. Their signature sauce strikes a fine balance of spicy and tangy and goes perfectly with pulled pork and other meats. It’s also notably thinner than many other BBQ sauces, making it great for dipping.
Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q
Serving up tender meats in Birmingham since the mid-‘80s, Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q offers a range of classic Sothern fare, from savory pork to beef brisket and even catfish. You’ll see the traditional smoked pulled pork fit for sandwiches, plus the Carolina-style pork in a vinegar-based sauce. Hearty meats are slow-cooked to perfection, and their famous cheese biscuits are an excellent preamble to the main course.
Full Moon Bar-B-Que
Follow the scent of wood smoke and you’ll find yourself at Full Moon Bar-B-Que. Whether you drop by the original Southside location or one of the many other restaurants that have followed, you’re sure to be satisfied with their black angus beef brisket or spare ribs. You can also go for the wings, with your choice of Buffalo sauce or peppery Alabama white sauce.
100 Dishes
Several of Birmingham’s BBQ joints have dishes that have landed on the “100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama” list. This list was curated by the Alabama Tourism Department to highlight the wonderful achievements of our state’s culinarians. Naturally, Birmingham is well represented in the BBQ field and beyond. The pork n’ greens at SAW’s Soul Kitchen appears on the list with its cooked-to-order greens accompanied by pulled pork and cheese grits, all topped with onion rings. Full Moon Bar-B-Que has a couple of entries on the list as well, starting with their marinated coleslaw. This fresh mix sets itself apart from the average slaw with a tangy vinaigrette marinade, while the sliced carrots are swapped out in favor of pimento peppers. For dessert, the list suggests Full Moon’s “half-moon” cookies, which are loaded with pecans and chocolate chips and dipped in melted chocolate.
