On January 18, Birmingham will celebrate the contributions of Civil Rights pioneer Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The holiday now has its own race here in Birmingham, and the fourth annual MLK Day 5K Drum Run is the perfect opportunity to get your heart racing for a good cause.
When and Where
The run will be held downtown in the Historic Birmingham Civil Rights District on Saturday, January 18. It will begin at 8 a.m. and should conclude by 10 a.m. The starting line will be located at 1701 4th Avenue N, Birmingham, AL 35203.
The 2020 MLK Day 5K Drum Run
The 5k’s 3.1-mile route will lead runners through the Civil Rights District and other scenic Birmingham locales. Along the course, you’ll pass through the Park District, Birmingham Green, and Rotary Trail. The race will offer much more than a good look at the city sights, as drumlines from metro area schools will line the route to provide a steady rhythm. This year, more than 200 drummers will stand along the route to spur on the runners with a long, continuous beat.
Before the run, the air will be filled with music while the runners limber up. Once everyone has crossed the finish line, there will be a drumline competition as well as booths set up for sponsors and other groups.
The large gathering of runners and drummers will come together for a good cause fitting the spirit of the holiday. The 5k honors the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by benefitting a variety of community organizations, schools, and churches.
5k Registration
Entry for the MLK Day 5K Drum Run is $30 in advance or $35 on the day of the event. You can get there at 7 a.m. if you plan to register that day. Community organizations that are signed up as 5k beneficiaries will receive $5 back for every group member that enters the race. For more details and to register, visit the 5k’s website.
