Alabama Theatre is the middle of its annual Christmas film series, and you can catch a comedy classic at the old movie palace before the big day. This week, bring the whole family to see holiday hijinks in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
When and Where
Alabama Theatre will screen Home Alone 2 on Thursday, December 19 at 7 p.m. Theater doors will open an hour and a half prior to the start of the film. Tickets are $9 per person, available via Ticketmaster. Children two years old and younger may enter for free. The venue is right in the middle of the revitalized theater district, located at 1817 3rd Avenue North, Birmingham, Alabama 35203.
It Happened Again
Set one year after the original film, Home Alone 2 once again sees young troublemaker Kevin McCallister break away from his family for a MacGyver-style adventure. A wrong flight lands him in New York City, where he must fend off the same clumsy burglars that he bested in the first film. We see Big Apple landmarks like Carnegie Hall, Central Park, and Rockefeller Plaza, dazzling with its giant Christmas tree. The Home Alone series is known for its comic mischief and chaotic traps, while career crooks Harry and Marv have proven to be surprisingly durable. With all of its antics, Home Alone 2 also serves as a fitting Christmas film, with heartwarming moments that keep family at the heart of the story.

In both Home Alone movies, Kevin McCallister sits down to watch old black-and-white gangster flicks on TV. These over-the-top noirs star gritty character actor Ralph Wesley Foody, and make the most of his wise-guy persona. The films, Angels with Fifthly Souls and Angels with Even Filthier Souls, both parody the 1938 gangland classic, Angels with Dirty Faces. The source material is certainly more serious than its 1990s sendup, and with the likes of Humphry Bogart, Ann Sheridan, and James Cagney, it’s considered one of the greatest movies ever made.
