Enjoy Some Cajun Food At The Girls Inc. Cajun Cook-Off

Mardi Gras may be over, but the good times will keep rolling at Railroad Park. On Sunday, April 6, Girls Inc. of Central Alabama will host a lively Cajun Cook-Off. Come out and taste the flavors of the bayou for a good cause! All funds raised on the day will benefit Girls Inc. of Central Alabama. This dedicated group hosts programs to support girls across a diverse range of backgrounds and inspires them to be strong, smart, and bold.

When and Where

The family fun and feasting will start at 11 a.m. on April 6 at Railroad Park. The picturesque green space is located at 1600 1st Avenue South, right beside Regions Field. Tickets for this event are $25, and children 12 and under enter for free. You can order tickets and learn more here.

The Cook-Off

Cooks from all across Birmingham will serve up their best offerings, including gumbo, jambalaya, and etouffee. These are all classic family dishes, and every cook has their own unique recipe. Guests can sample each dish and vote for their favorite.

While there’s spicy, savory offerings in abundance, try to save room for something sweet. In true Big Easy fashion, there will be plenty of powdered beignets to go around. Live music will fill the air, and kids can look forward to activities like face-painting and balloon art.

Did You Know?

In the South, we often use the terms “Cajun food” and “Creole food” interchangeably, but there are some major differences in ingredients and flavor. Creole food incorporates European flavors and cooking techniques, while the original Cajun community was more directly reliant on the natural bounty of Louisiana.

When the Acadians, or “Cajuns,” arrived in the swamplands of Louisiana in the 1700s, they had to live off whatever their environment could offer. Seasoning plays a major role in Cajun cooking, and cayenne pepper adds its recognizable spice. There’s a wide assortment of vegetables employed, and no Cajun kitchen would be complete without onion, celery, and bell pepper. Of course, filé from the sassafras tree can be found in any good roux.
