College hoops fans waiting on the official return of round ball for 2018 have to wait no longer! The Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers, and UAB Blazers all return to regular season action during the month of November. Let’s take a closer look at each team and their 2018 outlook:
The Alabama Crimson Tide
Despite the departure of Collin Sexton to last year’s NBA draft, Coach Avery Johnson has one of his most talented and deep rosters since he arrived at the Capstone. The 2018 roster includes returning stars like John Petty, Donta Hall, Dazon Ingram, and Herbert Jones.
Johnson’s squad also welcomes the arrival of a true point guard in the form of Kira Lewis, a 6’3” guard out of Hazel Green High School near Huntsville, AL. Lewis was an early high school graduate, but is going to be counted on in a big way despite his younger than freshman-age status.
Alabama officially opens the 2018 basketball season on Tuesday, November 6, at home against Southern University. SEC conference play will begin with perennially powerful Kentucky on Saturday, January 5, 2019, at Coleman Coliseum.
The Auburn Tigers
After an incredibly successful 2017 basketball season, Bruce Pearl’s squad isn’t in rebuilding mode – they are reloading. Seniors Horace Spencer and Bryce Brown will be providing leadership while the return of 6’11” center Austin Wiley will prove to be a huge boost for the deep and experienced Tigers.
Make no mistake about it, this is an incredibly talented roster from top to bottom, as evidenced by Auburn capturing their first regular-season SEC title since 1999 last year.
Auburn opens the 2018 season with University of South Alabama at home on Tuesday, November 6. Their first SEC game will be an away game at Mississippi on Wednesday, January 9, 2019.
The UAB Blazers
Coach Robert Ehsan and his UAB Blazers squad look to rebound following a disappointing season last year. The Blazers, while a young team last year, will be counting on rising sophomore Zack Bryant to lead the team. Ehsan will also be looking to junior forward Lewis Sullivan to improve on his production from last year to help make the Blazers successful.
UAB opens the season with a Tuesday, November 6 away game against Mercer. Conference USA play opens on Thursday, January 3, 2019, with a home game in Bartow Arena.
