Celebrate Dia De Los Muertos In Birmingham

Dia De Los Muertos

Dia de los Muertos is the Day of the Dead, but Birmingham’s Dia de los Muertos Festival is all about celebrating life. The people being honored might have passed away, but they are as much a part of the celebration as the living. If you want to honor a loved one or simply want to take part in this joyful tradition, clear your calendar for Nov. 2. When the day rolls around, head to Pepper Place, where you will see altars honoring the dead and so much more.

From Humble Beginnings

Birmingham’s Dia de los Muertos Festival came from humble beginnings. Around 15 years ago, photographer James “Spider” Martin passed away. You likely know his work even if you do not know his name. He took some of the most iconic photos of the Selma marches, and his passing rocked his family and fans. His daughter, an artist, decided to honor him with a Mexican-style altar.

The following November, other artists followed suit. More people joined in the following year, and like a snowball, it got bigger and bigger each time it came around. Now, it attracts thousands of people.

Altars, Food, and Fun

This is a celebration of life, and that celebration includes the dead. There is a roll call performed at the festival. The name of every honoree is called, and the crowds say “present” after each name. This is a way to allow the dead to be a part of the event.

There is also lots of food, music, and fun. There is even face painting, and it’s not unusual to see someone break out into dance. Do not make the mistake of thinking this is a sad event. It’s so much fun, and you need to check it out.
