When’s the last time you went to the Birmingham Museum of Art? If it’s been a few months, it’s time to make plans to go again. There are all kinds of interesting exhibits happening at the museum, and if you wait too long, they’ll be gone. Clear your schedule and head to the museum to check these out before it’s too late.
For Freedoms: Civil Rights and Human Rights
This is the museum’s newest exhibit, and it’s also the most captivating. The exhibit explores the four freedoms that President Franklin D. Roosevelt talked about in the famous “Four Freedoms” speech. It will take you back through the civil rights era to see who had those four freedoms, and it will cause you to explore how these freedoms are exercised and denied today. There’ll also be voter registration forms at the museum while this exhibit is open.
The exhibit will close on Nov. 18, so head over soon.
Waterline
Waterline is one of the most interesting exhibits to ever make it to the Birmingham Museum of Art. You’ll enter a dark gallery, where you will find a cubed glass sculpture. A light will move up and down the sculpture, creating shadows shaped like wolves, killer whales, and more.
It is hard to put this sculpture into words, so make plans to see it before Nov. 25.
The Original Makers: Folk Art From the Cargo Collection
The Birmingham Museum of Art has an impressive collection of folk art, and it’s selected the best pieces for this exhibit. The exhibit has more than 160 pieces from a variety of artists. There are all kinds of impressive works of art, but the quilts really stand out. You can see quilts that date all the way back to the 1800s at this exhibit.

Third Space/Shifting Conversations About Contemporary Art
Third Space is one of the most intriguing exhibits the museum has ever displayed. It consists of 100 works of art from the museum’s own collection. These works range from drawings to sculptures, and they are set up in a way to connect the South to other parts of the world. It is fascinating to see, so don’t miss it.
You can see this through Jan. 2019. That’ll give you time to come back again and again. You’ll be amazed by how you make new connections when you revisit this exhibit.
