Kayak Vs. Canoe: Which One Is Better For You?

People paddling in a kayak on river.

If you like to get out on the water in a canoe or kayak even a few times a year, you can save money by purchasing your own watercraft, but which should you choose? These questions will help you pick the right vessel for paddling around Alabama!

Where Are You Paddling?

One of the first questions you need to consider is where you’ll take your kayak or canoe most often. If you’ll mainly be on the Cahaba, there are plenty of spots where both canoes and kayaks can maneuver along the river! Wherever you plan to paddle, be sure to research and read reviews to ensure your watercraft of choice is practical for the space.

How Often Will You Use It?

If you plan on going out every weekend or more, storing a regular canoe or kayak won’t be such a big deal as you’ll get a lot of use out of it. However, if you won’t be out on the water frequently enough to justify storing your craft, you may be better off with an inflatable kayak that can be deflated and rolled up for easy storage. The threshold of justifying the storage is different for everyone, so be sure to check in with yourself and your available garage space!

Will You Be Alone?

If you’ll mostly be alone or out with older kids or other adults, either a canoe or a kayak will suit you! You’ll have assistance getting in/out of the water and with portages in a canoe, but everyone will also be independent enough for their own kayak. If you’ll mostly be with your family of younger children, a canoe is probably the best answer as long as you have another adult to assist with portages and getting in/out of the water.
