Fuel cells have been one of the more popular means of powering alternative energy vehicles in recent times. The first phase of fuel cell cars were designed for their ability to reduce carbon emissions to zero, but now car manufacturers are bringing these technological wonders into the design fold of the twenty first century. Honda unveiled their FCV concept vehicle in Japan, and hopes to make it available to the public by March of 2016. Compared to the older styles of fuel cell vehicles we have become used to the FCV is as impressive in looks as it is in mileage.
Honda’s Dedication to Reversing Climate Change
Honda’s fossil-fuel based cars are already very efficient in their performance, but fuel cells are the future and this company has embraced it wholeheartedly. The new FCV concept combines a more efficient engine able to produce 100kW of power output at an efficiency of 3.1kW/L (a 60 percent increase in efficiency from its predecessor) with a smaller size of engine allowing for more efficient use of space in the vehicle itself. The driving range on a single tank exceeds 300 miles and refueling takes a mere three to five minutes at 70 MPa of pressure.
Honda’s Fuel Cell Past
Honda has the unique pleasure of being the first company to produce a fuel cell powered vehicle on an assembly line designed for producing such vehicles. The FCCX Clarity was also the first fuel cell vehicle leased to an individual customer. Honda acknowledges that the future of personal transport needs to move away from dependence on fossil fuels and unlike other vehicle manufacturers that have been slow on the uptake, Honda has led the field in research and development of fuel cell technology, culminating in the FCV concept car unveiled in Japan.
Vehicles will eventually start moving away from fossil fuels and will branch out to other forms of alternative energy. Fuel cells are one of the most efficient alternative energy sources to power a vehicle in this day and age.
