What Are the Timing Chain and Timing Belt?

Honda Timing Chain BirminghamIt isn’t necessary to be a car expert just because you drive one, but sometimes it helps to have some extra knowledge about what goes on inside your vehicle. One of the biggest questions people have is in regards to the timing chain and timing belt. They wonder what they are, what they do, and what the difference between these two things is.

Their Function

Both the timing chain and timing belt serve the same purpose, which is why you will only find one or the other in a car. These systems work to control the camshafts within the engine. They work to open and close valves at the proper time to ensure that the vehicle operates smoothly.

Timing Chain

The timing chain is the traditional version of this mechanical component. It is a steel roller chain that is very similar to those in bicycles or motorcycles. Because they are made of steel or similar metals, these chains are incredibly durable, but they do need to work with a lubrication system.

Timing Belt

Timing belts are a slightly more recent innovation, and although they serve the same purpose as a timing chain, they are made of different materials. Instead of being completely made of steel, timing belts are rubber that is reinforced using steel wire. The rubber has a series of mounted cogs to fit within the appropriate grooves of the camshaft as well as the timing pulleys. These belts are lighter and don’t require lube, but they don’t last as long as timing chains.
