Understanding the Engine in Your Car

Car Engine BirminghamIt is possible to get away without truly understanding your car’s engine, but you will be at a significant advantage if you at least know the basics. This information will help you know whether a problem is serious and understand the explanation your mechanic gives you when you take your Honda in for engine repairs.

Main Components

There are typically 8, 6, or 4 pistons in an engine, and these travel up and down within the cylinders. The upper part of the piston is in the combustion chamber, which is where air and fuel mix before ignition. The other end holds the crankcase and oil. Pistons are typically made using lightweight aluminum alloy with a design that lets them float within the cylinder without touching the walls. The crankshaft connects with the pistons via a rod, and the up and down motion of the pistons rotates the crankshaft so that motion in a straight line becomes rotary motion. The valvetrain has the camshaft, lifters, pushrods, rocker arms, and valves, and it makes sure that air and fuel enter at the appropriate time.

The Stroke Cycle

The engine in your Honda works on what is known as the stroke cycle, which is the process that occurs in each cylinder. The intake stroke involves the piston descending and bringing air inside the cylinder while fuel is injected. Next is the compression stroke, when the valves are closed and the piston goes back up so the fuel-air mixture is compressed, improving efficiency and power. Then the power stroke involves a spark igniting the compressed mixture of fuel and air, leading to combustion, which brings the piston back down the cylinder. Finally, the exhaust stroke sends the piston back up so the used mixture leaves via the open exhaust valves.
