Birmingham offers many beautiful parks that are peaceful, and the locals are welcoming. Memorial Day’s great history can be traced back to when Americans lost thousands of soldiers during the Civil War in 1868. People spend this holiday many different ways, in Birmingham here are a few things going on around town during Memorial Day Weekend in 2017.
Memorial Day Remembrance at Veterans Memorial Park
Memorial Day is a Federal Holiday where American’s come together in memory in all who have died while serving in the country’s armed forces. While Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of every May, generally the entire weekend that proceeds that Monday is included in the holiday and celebration and remembrance. One of the best ways to come together with other Alabamians to show your support for Memorial Day is to join in the Day of Remembrance at Alabama’s Veterans Memorial Park. This event will be held on Sunday, May 28th from 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm and will allow area residents to honor veterans who have been added to the “Honor List of Alabama’s Deceased” since May 2016.
Visit the Veteran Cemeteries
To honor the Americans who lost their lives during their military service, you can visit the national cemeteries with friends and family. At these places, you can decorate the graves of the fallen soldiers with the USA flags or patriotic floral arrangments. The process will enable you to join thousands of volunteers from America and other nations who gather at the national cemeteries to decorate the graves with flowers and other things. There are three National Cemeteries in Alabama; the closest to Birmingham is in Montevallo.
Annual Community Clean-Up
On May 27th, 2017, you can join volunteers in cleanup activities Presented by Genuine Care Home Services to clean, repair, and improve public spaces or other areas such vacant lots, or abandoned properties that have been neglected or misused. During these community cleanups, people fix and clean the neglected public property in the city. They also reclaim the abandoned lots by eliminating the weeds and debris at public places and sidewalks. These activities on the Memorial Day play a significant role in maintaining the cleanliness of the city and the surrounding regions. While this event does not directly relate to Memorial Day, it does help senior citizens in the area who can not get out to do these things, and contributes to show pride in the area that so many fought for us to have!
