Many may not know this, but there is a free museum full of wonderful art in downtown Birmingham. Not only can you walk in and see these works of art for free, but these pieces were created by some of the most talented artists in the area and from around the world throughout different time periods.

What Can Be Seen at the Birmingham Museum of Art

There is a lot to discover within the Birmingham Museum of Art. You can find over 26,000 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, and decorative arts that date from ancient time to recent years. Several cultures are represented across the collection, and feature holdings from Asian, European, American, African, Pre-Columbian, and Native American art. It is important to take advantage of this free location, and to educate yourself on the art throughout history.

The mission statement of the museum states: “The mission of the Birmingham Museum of Art is to provide an unparalleled cultural and educational experience to a diverse community by collecting, presenting, interpreting, and preserving works of art of the highest quality.” This is not an easy thing to do in today’s culture, and it is important to take advantage of the opportunity that our city has provided.

Museum History

The museum was founded in 1951 and is owned by the City of Birmingham. It has not always been in the same building, but has been there since 1959 and was designed by Warren, Knight & Davis. The museum has many board members from the community that serve and keep the museum alive.
