Are you looking for some outdoor fun that goes beyond a standard hike? How about a trip to the Birmingham Zoo? This zoo is full of animals from around the world and offers a variety of experiences. Find out what’s new at the Birmingham Zoo, learn about the encounters, and then check out an upcoming event. Let’s start with the new arrivals.
Meet the New Arrivals
The Birmingham Zoo has some new arrivals you’ll want to meet during your visit. First, there’s Gizmo, a two-year-old red panda. Gizmo is quickly winning visitors over who are still mourning the loss of Parker and Sorrel, the zoo’s previous red pandas.
The zoo has also welcomed a new howler monkey. Instead of traveling from another location, the baby howler monkey was born at the zoo. The mother, Matea, has been bonding with her baby, and both are doing well.
The zoo even added some new dragons into the mix. They aren’t exactly the type of dragons you saw in “Game of Thrones,” but they’re almost as rare. The baby Philippine Sailfin Dragons were quite the surprise to zookeepers. They had been trying to incubate eggs for three years and didn’t notice when a female Philippine Sailfin Dragon buried eggs almost a foot deep. They found the eggs, and the rest is history. Now, you can see these cuties in person.
Embark on an Animal Encounter
While you can walk around and see the animals, you’ll have even more fun if you participate in an animal encounter. The White Rhino Encounter is the newest option and also the most thrilling. You’ll take a tour of the rhino barn and then interact with a southern white rhinoceros. You’ll also get a photo keepsake. It’s hard to describe how exciting the encounter is. It’s almost like the world stops spinning for a minute, giving you time to connect with the animal.
While this is quickly becoming the most popular animal encounter, it’s far from the only one. You’ll also have a blast feeding the giraffes, going on a goat walk, and more.
