The year 2016 is already showing good vibes to Honda. In November the 2016 Accord was named Car and Driver’s 10 best. Now the 2016 Honda Civic is getting its much deserved recognition. The new Civic was name the 2016 North American Car of the Year at the Detroit Auto Show beating out the Chevy Malibu and Mazda MX-5 Miata. The last time the Civic got the nod was 2006 when the Civic and Ridgeline took home awards.
The Award
The North American Car of the Year award is judged by 53 automotive journalists from all of the world. They pick from a group of three finalist in each category. They are allocated 10 points per category which they distribute however they see fit. The judges look at six different categories when considering the finalists: innovation, design, safety, handling, comfort and driver satisfaction. In order to qualify, the vehicle must have gone under a redesign or have had a substantially change. The jury awarded the Civic 203 votes. The Malibu got 181 and the MX-5 Miata received 146 votes.
