A Play About A Playwright
Drawing from the award-winning film, the story of writer J.M. Barrie is now a touring play. The lonely Londoner must overcome his self-doubt and find the courage to become a writer, and he finds all the inspiration he needs in his friend Sylvia and her four children, George, Michael, Jack, and Peter. Captivated by their vivid imaginations, Barrie crafts the world of Neverland and all its fantastic denizens.
When Barrie premiered Peter Pan (or Peter and Wendy), he took a tremendous gamble, as high society in 1904 London had never seen a performance quite like it. With a 1911 novel and numerous adaptations later, it’s clear that the venture paid off, and generations have been thrilled by the adventures of Peter and the lost boys.
Did you Know?
According to tradition, the actor that portrays Captain Hook also plays the role of the children’s father, Mr. Darling. The custom began with the very first showing of Peter Pan, when Gerald du Maurier requested the additional role. Many subsequent adaptations have followed suit. A notable exception occurred in in 2014, when Christian Borle portrayed both Darling and Mr. Smee. The role of Captain Hook was reserved for Christopher Walken.
