Honda Accord- 40 Years of Automotive Greatness

The first Accord made its debut in the United States 40 years ago. Since then it has won 30 Car and Driver 10 Bests awards and one sells about every 2 minutes. Where did this car come from and where is it going? Let’s take a look at the car we all know and love and its roots.

The first Honda Accord arrived in 1976. This hatchback captivated the car industry with its elegance, sleek design, and its high sales. It was obvious that this car was here to stay. In 1979, the still-loved sedan model came out.

Accord 1989

In 1989 the Accord was the first vehicle from a non-US automaker to become America’s Best-Selling automobile. Needless to say, America couldn’t get enough of the Honda Accord.

Accord 1994

In 1998, the Honda Accord set new standards for all vehicles when it became the first automobile to meet California’s Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle standards. This paved the way to a new class of midsize cars that were efficient and better for the environment. This was a win for everybody.

2005 saw the first ever Honda Accord Hybrid. This hybrid vehicle emphasized performance with Honda Integrated Motor Assist. The hybrid got better gas mileage than its 4-cylinder counterpart and it could go 0-60 in 6.7 seconds. Honda blurred the lines between efficiency and power and yet again created a whole new class of cars.

Accord 2008

In 2008 the Accord added two new safety advances: Advanced Compatibility Engineering ACE body structure and Vehicle Stability Assist. These two features made the Accord even safer.

Accord 2014

In 2014 the 10 millionth Accord was built and Honda created a two-motor hybrid engine that got 195 horsepower and still received a 50-mpg EPA city rating!
