So, you love having a sparkling clean car, but don’t want to keep spending all the extra money taking your vehicle to the local car wash. We get it. The good news is that with a minimal investment in some equipment, you can DIY car washes like a pro with some tips we’ve picked up courtesy of our friends at Popular Mechanics.
While some of these tips may seem a bit elementary, they are vital to getting the best results from an at-home car wash!
Reading Is Fun-damental
Before you apply any cleaning product to your vehicle, read the label. Again – read the label! Why? It’s simple. Not all automotive cleaning products are all-purpose, and some could actually damage the paint if used incorrectly. Also, reading the label ensures you are using the appropriate amount of product for maximum cleaning effectiveness on your vehicle.
The Wash Is Just The Beginning
The actual washing of the vehicle is really just the first step in the cleaning process. The wash is designed to loosen dust and dirt. It’s always a good idea to start by rinsing the car, as that will remove a large portion of the contaminants on the exterior of the vehicle. Then, you can begin the actual wash with soap designed for car washes (not liquid detergents or dish cleaners that could damage the integrity of the paint).
Scratches & Blemishes
Once you’ve done the initial surface wash, run your hands over the paint. You’ll feel blemishes and may even encounter scratches. This is where using a clay bar or compound for removing scratches comes into play. Be sure to consult the directions carefully on each of these before proceeding.
Polish & Wax To Finish
The final steps to that sparkling clean car are a thorough polish and finishing wax. The polish will give your vehicle a high-gloss appearance, and the wax will help lock in the clean appearance while protecting against any corrosives.
