Alabama-Made Honda Pilot Makes an Impression at Auto Show

2016 Honda Pilot

The 2016 Honda Pilot became the center of attention during its reveal at the Chicago Auto Show. This SUV is manufactured right in Alabama, helping boost the economy and support local business while providing an affordable, comfortable, and functional vehicle.

Honda’s Alabama Plant

Over the previous 11 years, Honda Manufacturing of Alabama has managed to produce almost 1.2 million Pilots, including 134,379 last year alone. In addition to Honda Pilots, the plant in Lincoln, Alabama, also produces the Honda Odyssey minivan, V6 engines, and the Acura MDX, a luxury SUV.

Pilot Updates

The 2016 Honda Pilot is the beginning of the third generation, offering an impressive amount of updates. Marc Ernst, development director and chief engineer of the redesigned Pilot, said this updated model sees advancements in every feature “from top to bottom.” With the number of upgrades made, this statement seems accurate.

Auto Show attendees noticed an angular body and sloping roofline to create a sophisticated yet modern appearance. The updated Pilot has lost 300 pounds, but has an increase in length of 3.5 inches, creating improved cargo space. The Pilot has also seen enhancements to the plug-and-play connectivity as well as the addition of a remote engine start system, push-button start, and the optional panoramic roof.

Pilot History

When the Pilot was first introduced during 2002, it was the first 8-passenger SUV available to the mainstream market that featured a unibody construction similar to a car as well as the associated smooth driving and good fuel economy. Manufacturing of the Pilot in Alabama began in 2004. In April 2008, the Alabama plant became the only Honda facility worldwide to produce this particular SUV.
