Drive your Honda Pilot around Alabama, and you will see plenty of other similar vehicles on the road. Although the 2016 Pilot is the class leader, it faces tough competition from other models, including the Ford Escape. At the moment, you can get behind the wheel of the 2016 Escape, although some details of the 2017 model are already out. Since details are still limited, however, it is easiest to compare the 2016 versions of both the Honda Pilot and Ford Escape. You can do some extra research to add the 2017 Escape to the equation if you want.
Base Engines
One of the best things about the 2016 Honda Pilot is that all models have the perfect balance of power and efficiency. The Ford Escape comes standard with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine while the Pilot has a 3.5-liter V6. As anticipated, this means that the Pilot can tow much more than the Escape, at 3,500 pounds compared to 1,500. The Pilot’s engine also has a much better output of 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque compared to 168 horses and 170 pound-feet in the Escape. Even with the added power, the Pilot is only slightly behind the Escape in terms of fuel economy.
Standard Features and Space
It is true that the Honda Pilot has a slightly higher starting price than the Escape, but it is well worth it between the added power and extra features. The Pilot, for instance, comes standard with both Bluetooth and a rearview camera, neither of which are standard on the Escape. The Pilot also has more front headroom and second-row headroom and legroom than the Escape. The Pilot even offers a third row of seats, something that isn’t available on the Escape.
In terms of cargo capacity, the 2016 Pilot has a clear lead over the Ford Escape as well. The Escape has a reasonable 34.3 cubic feet behind the 2nd row and 67.8 cubes behind the 1st row. The Pilot, meanwhile, has 55.9 and 109.2 cubic feet, respectively. Even with the 3rd row upright, the Pilot gives you 18.5 cubic feet for groceries and book bags.
