If you’re planning to buy the new Honda Accord, you’re probably aware that one choice you are faced with is which engine size to go for. Depending on the trim level you choose, you can opt for either a 2.4 liter engine or the more powerful 2014 Honda Accord V6. Perhaps you’ve already made that decision. To help you if you haven’t, here’s a comparison between the V6 and the more conservative 4 cylinder 2.4 liter option.

Trim Levels

One of the major factors which could affect your choice of engine is the availability of certain trim levels. It should be noted that the 2014 Honda Accord V6 is only available with some of the more expensive levels of trim. The good news is that you have a choice between the coupe or sedan car configuration. However, if you really want the V6 coupe, you are limited to the EX-L model. All other Honda Accord coupes come with the 2.4 liter engine.

You have a little more choice if you pick the more family-friendly sedan. The V6 sedan is available in EX-L or slightly lowlier EX versions. If your preference is for the LX or sport trim levels, then you will have to settle for the 2.4 liter.

At the very top end of the trim packages for the 2014 Honda Accord V6 is the V6 Touring. This is an exclusive model of the car with extra features and a higher degree of comfort than any others in the range.

Power versus Fuel Economy

As you might expect, the most obvious difference between the V6 and the inline 4 cylinder is in the power available to the driver. The 2014 Honda Accord V6 gets you from zero to 60 MPH in a sprightly 6.1 seconds. That comes courtesy of the engine’s 278 Horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque. The smaller engine delivers 185 Horsepower, 181 pound-feet of torque and goes from zero to 60 in the slightly more leisurely time of 7.8 seconds.

The V6 will almost certainly be for you if you like a lot of power beneath your right foot. If you intend to do any trailering with your car, then you’ll also find the bigger engine to your advantage. What you might not expect is the surprisingly subtle difference in fuel economy between the two engine options. The V6 gets a fairly respectable 26 miles out of a gallon of gas*, which is only four less than its 2.4 liter, four cylinder counterpart.

Prices

Trim levels, power and fuel consumption aside, there’s not much else to separate the V6 from the other engine option, except for price, that is. Naturally you can expect to pay less for the smaller engine. Prices for the 2.4 liter power train start at around $22,000, whereas the cheapest 2014 Honda Accord V6 is going to set you back $30,000.
